Google, Social media, VPNS in China
What works in China? What doesn’t work in China?
Living in China is an incredible adventure, but navigating the Great Firewall can sometimes feel like an extra challenge. Accessing social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Google services requires a bit of preparation, but with the right tools and a bit of patience, staying connected isn’t difficult.
VPN’s and why they are life-savers!
VPNS: A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is an absolute necessity for expats living in China. It allows you to bypass internet restrictions and access blocked websites. Whether you’re scrolling through Instagram, keeping up with news on Google, or FaceTiming friends and family, a good VPN is your secret weapon! Not all VPNs work in China, so doing a bit of research can save you some headaches when you get there. A few common VPNS that are well known (& reliable) in the expat community are ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Astrill.
VPN TIP 1: App stores in China might not let you download VPNs, so it’s best to set everything up beforehand.
VPN TIP 2: Keep a backup option- sometimes VPNs can slow down or temporarily stop working. Having two different VPNs can be a lifesaver!
VPN TIP 3: Check for updates – VPN providers often release updates to keep up with changing internet policies, so keep your app up to date.
While VPNs are fantastic, they aren’t always 100% reliable. Connectivity can vary depending on your location or the day’s internet restrictions. That’s where WeChat steps in as your backup communication hero.
Even without a VPN, WeChat is your best friend for staying connected in China. This all-in-one app isn’t just for messaging; it’s a powerhouse for daily life in China for locals and for expats (Think “Chinese version of Whatsapp but even better!”)
Why You Need WeChat
WeChat is used for almost everything in your day-to-day life. It’s the go to for everything from instant messaging and video calls to mobile payments, file sharing, and joining community groups. The best part is that it’s available to most people on the app store so your friends and family can download it to!
Using a VPN for accessing blocked sites and relying on WeChat for everyday communication ensures you’re covered in every situation. When your VPN is running smoothly, enjoy the freedom of using all your social media apps. If there’s a hiccup, just hop onto WeChat to keep your day moving.
Living in China is a unique experience, and with the right tools, staying connected to the world and embracing local life can be easy and seamless. Whether you’re sharing travel adventures on Instagram or catching up with friends over WeChat, you’ve got everything you need to make the most of your time in this amazing country!
