Is China Still Hiring English Teachers?
If you’ve been scrolling through travel blogs or career forums lately, you might have seen some conflicting chatter about the teaching market in China. You might be wondering, “Is the door still open?” or “Is it still a viable path for a recent grad from the US, UK, Canada, or Ireland?”
The short, emphatic answer is: Yes, absolutely.
In fact, the demand for high-quality, native-level English instruction is higher than ever, especially in the early childhood sector. While some regulations have shifted over the last couple of years, the market has matured, creating a more stable and professional environment for teachers. At MEF World, we’ve seen firsthand that schools are eager to welcome university graduates who bring energy and a fresh perspective to the classroom.
If you’re sitting on a degree and a sense of adventure, here is the real scoop on what the landscape looks like right now and why teaching in a Chinese kindergarten might be the smartest move you make this year.
The Current Landscape: Why Kindergartens are the “Sweet Spot”
You might have heard about the “Double Reduction” policy from a few years ago that changed how private tutoring centers operate. While that shifted the industry, it actually made kindergarten positions the most sought-after and stable roles in the country.
At MEF World, we specialize specifically in placing teachers in physical positions inside kindergartens. Why? Because early childhood is where the most impactful learning happens. Chinese parents are incredibly dedicated to giving their children a head start, and they value the immersive environment that only a native-speaking teacher can provide.
Why Kindergarten?
-
Better Working Hours: Unlike language centers that require late nights and weekends, kindergartens follow a standard Monday-Friday schedule. This means you actually have your weekends to explore.
-
High Energy, High Fun: You aren’t drilling grammar into bored teenagers; you’re singing, playing, and using the MEF World system to make English fun.
-
Total Immersion: You become a staple of the school community, working alongside local teachers and seeing your students’ progress daily.

“Am I Actually Qualified?” (The Reality Check)
One of the biggest myths is that you need a degree in Education or years of experience to get started. While China has strict visa requirements, they are very clear-cut. If you are a graduate from the US, UK, Canada, or Ireland, you are already halfway there.
The Standard Checklist:
-
A Bachelor’s Degree: In any subject! Whether your degree is in Biology, History, or Marketing, it fulfills the legal requirement for the Z-Visa (the only legal work visa).
-
Native English Speaker: Holding a passport from the US, UK, Canada, or Ireland (among a few others) is essential for the specific visa categories we support.
-
TEFL/TESOL Certification: You’ll need a 120-hour certificate. If you don’t have one yet, don’t sweat it—we don’t expect you to have everything figured out before you talk to us. We even offer training through our own TEFL platform.
-
Clean Criminal Background: Safety is a priority for these schools, so a clear background check from your home country is a must.

Teaching + Traveling: The MEF World Difference
Let’s be honest: you aren’t just moving across the world to work. You’re moving to see the Great Wall, eat authentic Sichuan hotpot, and maybe hop over to Thailand or Japan on your breaks.
The beauty of working with MEF World is that we bridge the cultural gap. Moving to China is a massive life change, and doing it alone can be overwhelming. We provide:
-
Full Support: From helping you navigate the visa process to being there when you land.
-
Training: We don’t just throw you in a room with 20 toddlers. Our training system takes you step-by-step through our proven curriculum.
-
Community: You’ll have access to the MEF China Support Forum where you can ask questions and connect with others who are on the same journey.
Next Steps: Making it Happen
If you’re looking for a sign to start your post-grad adventure, this is it. China is hiring, the salaries are competitive (often allowing you to save a significant portion of your paycheck), and the experience is world-class.
We don’t do online teaching because we believe the real magic happens in person. If you’re ready to trade the office cubicle for a classroom in Shanghai, Beijing, or one of China’s vibrant “Tier 2” cities, we’re ready to help you get there.
